Kitá Wines

In 2010, the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians purchased the Camp 4 property which is a 1,400 acre parcel including 256 acres of prime vineyard land. The vineyard is situated on the eastern most edge of the Santa Ynez Valley and is the gateway to Happy Canyon AVA. Camp 4 was planted in 1999 and is now home to 20 varieties, focusing on Rhone and Bordeaux varieties. Following the purchase of the Camp 4 property, Kitá Wines was born. Kitá Wines is a small, premium winery located in the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley in the Santa Barbara County AVA. The word "Kitá" translates to "Our Valley Oak" in the Santa Ynez Chumash native language of Samala. Like the valley oak, our wines highlight the gifts from Mother Earth and embodies the spirit of the Santa Ynez Valley. We focus on respecting the balance of soil, climate, location, and taste. With a total case production of 1,500 cases, Kitá wines are crafted using sustainable methods and a blend of old world and new world winemaking techniques. All of the wines have been harvested by hand based on a balance of chemistry and taste to preserve the highest quality. Our wines are produced in small batches, aiming to have minimal manipulation and maximizing varietal characteristics. Kitá prides itself on its connection and balance to the land, which is a Chumash philosophy our winemaker, Tara Gomez was raised on. Being the first and so far only Tribe to be recognized by the State Legislature of California, as having a Native American winemaker, winery, and vineyard run solely by the Tribe, Tara ensures that this connection can be seen in the vineyard and tasted in the wines.
